OELN Reviews

Recently, I took the time to review another Novel written by a light novelist I came in contact with here on Facebook Trent Moulae titled "The Protector"
First, a spoil free summary:
A Demon named Zane accompanies is childhood best friend and Master (though neither feel that way) to a new high school.
"Benjiro Senior School" there, they must face school life, unseen threats and even each other as, one may end up seeing the other differently and their beliefs tested. And The Review:
This is a very intriguing story, not only does it take the norm out of the "demon" but the characters are strong and unique.
I'm reminded of both Inuyasha and Fate/stay when it comes to the character of Zane and his relation to Yulia. Not necessarily because of the way they act but because it takes the idea of a certain race and puts them in a new, bigger box. The "Demon/protector" is a lot like the Servant role in Fate/Stay, they come from a place beyond to serve.
But, unlike the more, combative style of the "servants" from Fate/Stay, Zane is more of an intimidator... Still, that doesn't mean he doesn't get into fights, nor that he doesn't enjoy it.
In the case of the term "Demon" it reflects Inuyasha in that, they are not all the same, and this is very clear and still VERY original.
Yulia is very contradictive, which I believe makes her more human shy one moment then bold the next, she has mood swings, there's nothing 2D about her. And it's clear, although she might not necessarily NEED her demon, she really cares about Zanes company though, like every man at some point I'm sure, this is something Zane really needs to understand better.
I was very satisfied and it left me guessing, my only criticism is, I think the cliffhanger at the end of this volume was a bit to harsh.
I understood that there is an element here which is kind of an entry point for something, but I feel like, the end could have ended at the true end of the set of events and still had the strong effect, if not a bit stronger and more solid.
All in all though, it's intriguing, original, very well thought out, very human, and I didn't even scratch the surface of the characters Or the plot in this review as the prologue proves there's more to the story than meets the eye but, you'll have to discover the rest yourself by reading.
4.3/5 Stars
